THE NEW CURRENT KEERT TERUG MET EEN JUBILEUMEDITIE IN BRUTUS ROTTERDAM
In februari maakt The New Current voor de vijfde keer deel uit van de Rotterdam Art week! Met een focus op nieuwe technieken en presentatievormen zoals installaties, performance, audiovisuele kunst en cross-overs toont The New Current de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in de kunstwereld op een interactieve wijze. Complexe kunstwerken worden vertaald naar een unieke ervaring waarbij recent afgestudeerde beeldend- en performance kunstenaars, kunstliefhebbers en nieuwsgierigen samenkomen.
Voor deze jubileumeditie presenteren 25 veelbelovende kunstenaars hun werk in Brutus (voormalig AVL Mundo). Het is niet zomaar een plek voor presentatie, maar een plek waar kunstenaars echt de tijd, ruimte en vrijheid krijgen om te experimenteren.
De rauwe locatie herbergt grote en kleine industriële tentoonstellingsruimtes die zich uitstekend lenen voor het tonen van videokunst, lichtinstallaties en performances.
De rauwheid die de locatie karakteriseert en de visie van Brutus sluit nauw aan bij de beleving die The New Current nastreeft. Het is de perfecte plek voor het publiek om te genieten van beeldende kunst, muziek, dans, spoken word en meer! Tijdens de Rotterdam Art Week worden er bij Brutus nog verschillende andere kunstpresentaties getoond, genoeg te zien dus!
The New Current is een platform voor kunstenaars die aan het begin van hun carrière staan. In een jaarlijkse tentoonstelling presenteert The New Current jonge, recent afgestudeerde kunstenaars uit heel Nederland. Met als doel; de zichtbaarheid en positie van opkomende kunstenaars verbeteren. Middels het netwerk van The New Current, het bezoeken van afstudeerpresentaties en het scouten van nieuw talent via andere kanalen wordt een diverse groep veelbelovende kunstenaars samengebracht die behoefte hebben geschikte presentatiemogelijkheden en experiment. Kunstenaars worden uitgedaagd, gestimuleerd en met elkaar in contact gebracht. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit groot, vernieuwend werk van kunstenaars met een autonome-, design- of theaterachtergrond; waarbij nieuwe stromingen en ontwikkelingen in de sector aandacht krijgen.

THE NEW CURRENT STRIJKT NEER OP NIEUWE LOCATIE
Dit voorjaar is het dan eindelijk zo ver! Tijdens Rotterdam Art Week keert The New Current terug met een bijzondere tentoonstelling waarbij talentvolle kunstenaars hun werk presenteren. Kunstliefhebbers krijgen de mogelijkheid om kennis te maken met vernieuwende technieken en presentatievormen, zoals audiovisuele kunst en cross-overs. Daarnaast is er veel ruimte voor performances en interactieve werken. Met 25 deelnemende kunstenaars en dagelijkse performances belooft het de grootste editie tot op heden te worden!
Deze edities vindt plaats op een nieuwe locatie aan de Max Euwelaan. Een rauwe ruimte met nóg meer mogelijkheden voor de deelnemende kunstenaars. Het biedt de perfecte gelegenheid voor publiek om te genieten van alles wat The New Current te bieden heeft; niet alleen het tonen van werk, maar licht schijnen op de veelbelovende ontwikkelingen binnen de Nederlandse kunstscene aan de hand van een totaalbeleving.
Rotterdam is en blijft als kunst- en cultuurstad volop in ontwikkeling. Nationaal en internationaal krijgt Rotterdam steeds meer aandacht. In de stad groeit het aantal makerspaces, kunst-initiatieven en creatieve verzamelgebouwen sterk. Presentatiemogelijkheden voor startende kunstenaars blijven echter achter. De talenten die de iconen van de toekomst moeten worden krijgen weinig podium om zichzelf te bewijzen; aan de media, galeriehouders en aan zichzelf.
Sinds 2016 biedt The New Current een platform aan recent afgestudeerde, ambitieuze en veelbelovende kunstenaars die in Nederland behoefte hebben aan ruimte voor groot en cross-mediaal werk. Met als doel; de kunstwereld open breken voor een nieuwe generatie. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit groot, experimenteel werk van (performance) kunstenaars met een autonome-, design- of theaterachtergrond; waarbij nieuwe stromingen en ontwikkelingen in de sector aandacht krijgen.
Eén van deze kunstenaars is Sandipan Nath. Hij ontwikkelde voor deze tentoonstelling een nieuwe versie zijn lopende audiovisuele onderzoeksproject - ‘Ocean Bloom’. Bezoekers worden aan de hand van een tijdruimtelijke compositie van licht en geluid gepresenteerd met een uitdaging om de tweedeling tussen mens en niet-mens te overwinnen. In 2020 studeerde hij af in Industrial Design (MA) aan de KABK. Zijn veelzijdige achtergrond in engineering, design en generatieve kunst resulteert in een uniek werk dat bezoekers meeneemt in een belevingswereld.
Ook andere vormen van cross-overs krijgen de ruimte. Zo presenteren Alma van de Burgwal en Anne van de Ven de installatie ‘Liquid leaves’. Het werk bestaat uit een koperen ‘muur’ en onthult een proces dat de seizoensveranderingen weergeeft; van natuurlijk fenomeen naar architecturale taal. Alma studeerde in 2020 af aan de Rietveld academie. Anne deed dit in 2018. Beide werken binnen de kruisbestuiving tussen beeldende kunst en architectuur. Bezoekers kunnen de interactie met het werk aangaan terwijl de verbinding tussen architectuur en de kwaliteiten van de natuurlijke omgeving worden uitgediept. Het werk doet denken aan een levend schilderij, dat steeds nieuwe kleuren, patronen en texturen onthult, totdat het materiaal opraakt en ophoudt te bestaan.
Annebel Bruschinski biedt weer een ander perspectief op mens, materiaal en omgeving. Met ‘Bed, Embodied’, presenteert ze een installatie die de intimiteit en de relatie tussen mensen en alledaagse voorwerpen viert. Annebel studeerde afgelopen jaar af aan de HKU. Ze is gefascineerd door objecten; hoe we ermee omgaan, hoe ze symboliseren wat we doen en waar we zijn. Haar filosofische benadering wordt gevisualiseerd in een sculptuur achtige installatie. Door herkenbare onderdelen te deconstrueren, is Annebel in staat om de betekenisvolle relatie tussen mens en object bloot te leggen.
The New Current vindt plaats van 17 tot en met 22 mei 2022, op adres Max Euwelaan 31 in Rotterdam.
Locatie is goed bereikbaar via het openbaar vervoer. Bushalte HES (bus 75, 83, 140, 145, 183 en 283) is op 5 minuten loopafstand. Gratis parkeren in op het terrein. Toegangskaartjes kosten € 5 per stuk, inclusief een welkomstdrankje. Kinderen onder de 12 jaar zijn gratis. Toegangskaartjes zijn online verkrijgbaar vanaf 1 maart 2022.

THE NEW CURRENT KEERT TERUG MET WERK VAN VEELBELOVENDE MAKERS
Tijdens de Rotterdam Art Week die eind juni van start gaat presenteert The New Current een nieuwe tentoonstelling met werk van veelbelovende jonge kunstenaars. Binnen een oppervlakte van 2000m2 in industrieel gebouw de Spaanse Kubus toont het platform voor jong talent groot cross-mediaal werk.
The New Current biedt sinds 2016 een platform aan veelbelovende, recent afgestudeerde kunstenaars die in Nederland behoefte hebben aan ruimte voor groot en cross-mediaal werk. Jaarlijks realiseert de organisatie dit tijdens één van de belangrijkste kunstevenementen in Nederland: de Rotterdam Art Week. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit het werk van twintig makers uit heel Nederland. De rode draad binnen de tentoonstelling is nieuwe media en de digitale samenleving die tijdens de pandemie aan belang steeds verder is toegenomen. Publiek kan met name groot werk verwachten waarin de scheidslijnen van meer traditionele vormen van kunst worden verweven met nieuwe technieken, media en performance.
Zo presenteert kunstenaar Zalán Szakács (1992) de performatieve installatie Eigengrau, a contemporary phantasmagoria, die het publiek een illusionistisch ritueel laat beleven. De kunstenaar studeerde in 2017 af aan de Design Academy in Eindhoven. Hij karakteriseert zichzelf als ‘post-digitale kunstenaar’, audiovisueel performer en onderzoeker die media theorieën onderzoekt met gebruik van licht, ruimte en geluid. Zij conceptuele benadering van zijn onderwerpen resulteren in interactieve ervaringen bij het publiek.
Maar ook non-digitale vernieuwende technieken zijn onderdeel van de tentoonstelling. Zo presenteert Alma van de Burgwal (1995) haar werk ‘Two Deserts’, dat de duale grenzen van het paradijs onderzoekt. Het werk is een onderzoek naar ‘goddelijke’ materialen en bestaat uit doorzichtige porseleinen elementen die huiveren wanneer er een schaduw op valt. Alma studeerde in 2020 af aan de Rietveld Academie. Binnen haar werk richt zij zich op een combinatie tussen architectuur en ruimtelijk werk. Daarbij gebruikt zij onder anders technieken uit de wereld van keramiek en beeldhouwen. Dit resulteert in intrigerend werk dat zich tussen architectuur en poëzie bevindt.
De enorme, rauwe ruimte van de Spaanse Kubus is een perfecte plek voor het presenteren van groots en meeslepend werk. De beleving voor publiek staat hier centraal. Aangevuld met speciale performances, interactieve rondleidingen en artist talks biedt The New Current een totaalprogramma waarin het publiek op de hoogte wordt gebracht van wat nieuw is in de Nederlandse kunst scene.

At The New Current, young talent gets the opportunity to create and exhibit new, experimental and site-specific work. A former parking garage in Spaanse Polder, an industrial area in Rotterdam, literally makes room for these makers during Art Rotterdam Week, 4-9 February 2020.
Captivating work in a large space
During the exhibition, the artists examine the space between human experiences and digital technologies, which seem to move increasingly further away from our natural reality. With an area of 2.000m2 at their disposal, the makers are literally given the space to make site-specific and entirely new work during Art Rotterdam Week, commissioned by The New Current. With this grand, non-commercial exhibition, the artists get the rare chance to present themselves and create large and engaging work.
Freerk Wilbers
For this exhibition, artist Freerk Wilbers will create a life-size mobile, operated by an engine, inspired by the work of American sculpture Alexander Calder (1898-1976). According to Wilbers, his work as an artist has given him a new appreciation for mechanics and construction. Currently located in Guangzhou, China, Wilbers is working on a special, integrated engine that will drive his mobile. Human perception takes centre stage in this work. By applying changeable movements, the mobile plays with the expectation patterns of the human mind.
Quinda Verheul
Several artists have taken this opportunity to involve the audience in their work. Commissioned by The New Current, Rotterdam artist Quinda Verheul is creating an installation, themed ‘hidden reality’, in which the audience has a part to play. Verheul uses mirrors as a natural element to create the illusion of infinity. She developed her predominantly autonomous art practice after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven, working for Hella Jongerius’ design studio in Berlin, and several residencies in Morocco, Indonesia, and at B.A.D in Rotterdam.
Nikki Hock
For the New Current, Nikki Hock will also present a new, interactive installation. Using light and smoke, the artist creates a moving experience for his audience. Hock studied mime and graduated from the Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Spatiality and the public’s perception are important elements in his work. His installation YYOY (which he presented at EYE Filmmuseum and GLOW in Eindhoven, and for which he won the N8 award) revolved around the feeling of fear, created by a rousing combination of light, performance, and sound. This promising artist received the 3Package Deal in 2014, a development grant from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
Federico Murgia
Sound and light take centre stage in Federico Murgia’s work as well. The Italian artist approaches the elements in a more scientific manner. Murgia started his career studying Grafic Arts in Bologna, and got his Master in ‘Interactive media and environments’ at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. During The New Current, he will present Timeless waterfall, a site specific installation in which light, sound and the pumping of water creates the illusion of natural patterns and phenomena within a controlled environment.
In total, the exhibition showcases around twenty works by young makers working in the Netherlands. In addition, daily performances around the exhibition’s theme will take place. The official opening is Tuesday 4 February from 19:00 – 22:00.

An ambitious exhibition at the Spaanse Kubus shows work by new makers After their debut in February 2019, The New Current returns to one of the biggest art events in the Netherlands: Art Rotterdam Week. During the exhibition, upcoming artists explore the (un)real world between humans and technology. The large-scale exhibition shows illustrious works of stature and can be visited from 4-9 February 2020 in the Spaanse Kubus, near the Van Nelle Fabriek. The show opens with a special event on the evening of the 4th.
Grand works in a raw space
During Art Rotterdam Week, The New Current offers a platform to Dutch artists at the start of their career. This will take place in the former indoor garage at the Spaanse Kubus, close to the Van Nelle Fabriek. During the exhibition, the artists approach the space between human experiences and the increasingly further removed-from-reality world of technology. The exhibition features mostly large works, and serves as a counterweight to the more traditional exhibitions shown during Art Rotterdam Week: not for profit and in a raw, unpolished space.
The New Current
With The New Current, founders and art professionals Yvonne de Jong and Sophie de Vos aim to crack open the market for recently graduated artists. Besides curating a large, annual exhibition, the platform offers a programme filled with performances, screenings and artist talks in order to reach the widest possible audience. Prior to the art week – on 10, 11, 17 and 18 January – The New Current offers masterclasses and talks at partner TENT Rotterdam, during which new makers can learn about the different aspects of a successful career from established artists, gallery owners and other professionals.
Stichting Droom en Daad
This year, The New Current’s work is made possible by the Rotterdam foundation Droom en Daad, run by former director of Amsterdam Rijksmuseum Wim Pijbes. This new collaboration is an important step towards our desire to turn Rotterdam into a city where young art can find new possibilities. “We want to show new talent with refreshing ideas and discipline-defying concepts to a large public, without needing a specific network, representation or prior large presentations,” says co-curator and cofounder Sophie de Vos. “A city like Rotterdam is the perfect fit, the kind of place where hard work and getting your hands dirty is more important than traditional notions and ways of working. We are thrilled to be able to offer a platform like this during Art Rotterdam Week.”
The New Current returns during Art Rotterdam Week 2020
After the last edition in February 2019, The New Current returns to one of the largest art events in the Netherlands: the Art Rotterdam Week, which will take place from the 5th until the 9th of February 2020.
We're happy to announce that for the next edition we will collaborate with Foundation Droom & Daad. This collaboration is an important step in the desire to make Rotterdam a city where emerging artist will be able to find new opportunities.

The New Current offers a platform to young artists at Art Rotterdam Week
From 6th till 10th of February 2019 The New Current is, for the first time, part of Art Rotterdam Week. In de baggage hall, at the ground level of the iconic Cruise Terminal on the Wilhelminakade a special Art Rotterdam Week edition will take place.
The New Current is a new Rotterdam platform for artists at the start of their career. The organisation produces a yearly thematic exhibition solely with works of artists that graduated no longer then five years ago. With an additional program around networks expansion, entry to the market and professional development, The New Current responds to the current situation within the art market. The domination of large galleries and art fairs creates a difficult position for starting artists who want to enter it. With the additional demise of smaller art spaces that focus on experimental presentations, it become even more challenging for young talents to develop, present and prove themselves.
The New Current had previous editions during 'Art Route Kralingen' and in the ZOHO quarter of Rotterdam with a presentation of amply 1000 m2. With the goal to create lasting possibilities for the presentation of young artists The New Current now initiates, as part of Art Rotterdam Week 2019, a special collaboration with art fair Qade Solo Project, taking place on the first floor of the Cruise Terminal. “By making a connection to Qade and the Art Week in general we offer an important platform to young artists’’, says co-curator Sophie de Vos. “Being part of an art fair is for many young artists extremely difficult. Without representation it is almost impossible. Besides that bringing unknown artists to an expensive art fair is for many galleries just too much of a risk. With The New Current at Art Rotterdam Week we want to offer these artists a new, much needed platform.”
The New Current offers next to a large exhibition a side program of various performances, also all by young artists. The entire program is free of charge.
