Somewhere Around 900MHz

Somewhere Around 900MHz consists of a repurposed surveillance tool that generates a sound composition by collecting sensitive information from nearby phones. Using listening as research, this site-specific audiovisual composition is made for and by the people, and can help gain insight into the invisible network in which we permanently operate. With this installation, Christian tries to create space for speculation and reflection on contemporary and future tactics of surveillance capitalism.

Christian Schwarz is a musician, artist and founder of transhumanist collective ILAR. He works on several long-term musical projects that have resulted in immersive live performances as well as physical releases. ILAR's projects utilise concepts of information- and communication theory, technological determinism, randomness and various aleatory processes to transcend predictable habits of visual, sonic and physical composing.
