Sarah Damai Hoogman

An Archive of the Arctic Echoes is a multisensory installation combining semi-scientific research, sound, textiles, and technology. During a 2024 residency on Spitsbergen, Sarah recorded methane bubbles released by melting permafrost and captured infrared images of emissions. These recordings now form an interactive soundscape woven into embroidered maps marking each research location. As you interact with the work, LEDs illuminate in response to the methane recordings and local Arctic sounds. The work shows how art, science, and technology can intersect to address global challenges, encouraging reflection on the present and future of our planet.
Next to the installation is a presentation of infrared photos taken by Sarah, showing the methane gas in Spitsbergen.

About the artist

Sara Damai Hoogman explores the intersections of technology, ecology, science, nature, and perception. She is particularly drawn to ecological change and the invisible processes of the natural world, which she translates into immersive human-scale experiences emerging from field research and technological experimentation. Through sound-based installations and experience-driven projects, she repeatedly explores how art can reveal hidden phenomena, sensitize perception, and encourage reflection on our relationship with the environment.
