JACK OOMES

Works Like Magic is a video installation exploring the growing demand for psychological guidance and how this uncertain search is entangling with commerce. The installation creates a space for self-exploration much like a quiet room or meditation pod, but here it is taken over by profit-driven “spiritual” figures selling a visualization method called a Mind Movie, rooted in the idea of manifesting desires through imagery. Seeing how widespread this branch of the self-help industry is, Oomes reflects on how it shapes people’s ideas about spirituality. Some sceptical, some idealised. By showing the source of these associations, in a meditative, pod-like space, you are invited to question your own biases and assumptions about spirituality.

About the Artist

Jack Oomes is a graphic designer and image maker whose practice revolves around analogue experimentation, using hands-on processes to uncover unexpected forms and effects. These are then translated into graphic media such as moving images and print. Rather than aiming for control or precision, often associated with digital tools, Oomes embraces unpredictability, allowing the process itself to shape the outcome.
